The calm North Atlantic Ocean and Mount Esja in the background designed by Joseph Cubitt and opened by Queen Victoria in 1869.  It has five wrought iron arches and a total length of 281m. this bascule suspension bridge completed 1894 opens on average 13 times a day using its electro-hydraulic drive system to control the 1,200 tonne bascules redesigned with a perpendicular gothic style by charles barry in 1840.  It took 30 years to complete, featuring 1,100 rooms organised symmetrically around two series of courtyards.  officially named palace of westminster in 1987.
